About St. Charles, MO

The city of Saint Charles is located to the northwest of Saint Louis on the western side of the Missouri River. Founded in 1769 by Louis Blanchette, a French-Canadian fur trader, the area, once ruled by Spain, is Missouri’s third oldest city.

The restored historic city is rich with history. It was in Saint Charles that Lewis and Clark began their journey up the Missouri River, seeking the route to the Pacific Ocean by order of president Thomas Jefferson.

Saint Charles was also the state’s first capital from 1821 to 1826. Explorer and settler Daniel Boone created the Boone’s Lick Trail through the Saint Charles countrywide, out of which grew the Santa Fe Trail and later the Oregon Trail – critical trails for early pioneers seeking to go west.
