Operation Finally Home: Next Steps & How You Can Help

By Matt Belcher

Last fall, we were notified by Operation FINALLY HOME that there was a soldier and his young family that wanted to move back to the St. Louis area so he could be close to family for support with his injuries from an IED explosion incurred in Afghanistan.

Upon hearing his story, and finding out that we had an opportunity to help this young family, we felt it was our obligation and duty to step up and help.

Last fall, we were able to work with the St. Louis Cardinals and surprise the Family by awarding them a new home to be built by Operation FINALLY HOME and Hibbs Homes.

After the initial announcement and surprise, we went to work. We began the search for a suitable lot to build their new home. This became a more difficult task than we’d anticipated. We hoped to find a lot in a good school district for their 3 young boys – a goal that added to the scarcity and premium of any lots we looked to acquire. Thankfully, our friend John Shaw of Tom Shaw Realtors knew about the project and kept us in mind when he began working with Simmons Bank and The Lipton Group to sell some lots in the Rockwood School District. He reached out to let us know that he would ask them if they’d be willing to discount the price of the land they were looking to sell.

Tom shared our project with Simmons and Lipton, and upon hearing the story of the Howes Family – and about the work of Operation FINALLY HOME, the two organizations decided to donate the cost of the land in full!

Earlier this summer, we were able to take the Howes family out to visit the land where their home will be built in Wildwood!

How You Can Help

After a construction town hall meeting held in July, many more trade partners and materials suppliers of Hibbs Homes & Hibbs General Contracting have also donated time and materials for this veteran and his family’s new home but many are still needed!

Some of our top needs include:

  • Donated time by qualified carpenters or cash equivalent
  • Lumber for the project, including:
    • Walls
    • Subfloor
    • Roof Trusses & Sheathing
  • Cash donations for all other expenses

Donations of materials, labor and cash for this project to Operation FINALLY HOME are Tax deductible.
